Academic Stress & Perfectionism

A meeting scene with two people working at a white table, one using a laptop and the other taking notes, with a vase of calla lilies, glasses of water, and minimalistic decor in the background.

When trying your hardest never feels like enough

You study for hours, turn everything in on time, push yourself constantly — and somehow it still doesn't feel like enough. The bar keeps moving. The anxiety before every test, every grade, every college deadline just keeps building.

Maybe you've been told you're driven or ambitious. But from the inside it doesn't feel like drive — it feels like fear. Fear of falling behind, letting people down, or finding out you're not as capable as everyone thinks you are.

That's not ambition. That's perfectionism. And it's exhausting.

What academic stress & perfectionism look like in teens

  • Spending hours on assignments that "should" take 30 minutes

  • Rewriting, redoing, or never feeling satisfied with your work

  • Tying your entire self-worth to your grades or achievements

  • Panic, shutdown, or physical symptoms around tests and deadlines

  • Procrastinating because starting feels too risky — what if it's not good enough?

  • Comparing yourself constantly to classmates, siblings, or impossible standards

  • Feeling like you can never really relax — there's always something else to do

  • Dreading disappointing your parents, teachers, or coaches

The pressure is real. but it doesn't have to run your life

A lot of the teens I work with are incredibly capable — and completely burned out. They've learned to measure their worth by their output, and somewhere along the way stopped knowing who they are outside of their achievements.

Therapy isn't about lowering your standards or not caring about school. It's about building a relationship with yourself that isn't contingent on performance — so you can actually do your best work without it costing you everything.

for pARENTS

Perfectionism in teens can be hard to identify because it often looks like conscientiousness or high achievement from the outside. But if your teen is constantly stressed, never satisfied, or tying their entire mood to their performance — that's worth paying attention to.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation call where we can talk through what you're noticing and whether therapy feels like the right fit.
